‘Why we are here, what we believe and how we behave’

This was the title originally given to a 10 month long project we undertook for Travis Perkins plc. It also sums up pretty well what much of our work is about finding out.

The objective was to define and articulate the Group Values by consulting with a cross-section of managers and employees in each of the 17 different subsidiaries. Many of these companies, such as Wickes and Tile Giant, are household names in themselves.

The project was particularly significant because it required a creative approach to gathering the intelligence and insights required to ensure that the views were representative of employees in all types of roles and locations in each of the businesses.

The solution involved training teams of employees to undertake some of the research themselves. This led not just to the development of an authentic Values proposition, but giving large numbers of employees across the group a set of skills that would help them to gather opinions from fellow employees, customers and suppliers effectively.

When the Values were revealed, one long-serving board director said “I’ve been here for 20 years and seen many projects like this come and go. But this is different. This is us.”
